Beginners Punch Needle Workshop

Beginner Punch Needle Workshop
$75.00

So, you’re interested in learning about the wonderful world of Punch needling aye? Listen, I completely get it! I can’t be the only one who feels like this “new” art trend is consuming most of my social media channels. But I’m not mad about the masterpieces I’ve seen so far. Naturally, I thought “Ohhh I can do this”. And spent the next several hours (read: months) going through the deepest of dives down the wonderous tunnel of Punch Needling fiber art. Not only is this craft incredibly relaxing and therapeutic, but it's also a fantastic way to unleash your creativity and even make some extra money on the side, amen? With that, I’m SUPER excited to teach you everything I’ve learned! Like….First off, did you know this craft has been around since the 1800s, with its earliest origins tracing back to Egyptian civilization? (insert side eye grin and black woman ‘Mmph’).

anywho, What is Punch Needle? Punch needle is a traditional rug-making technique that uses a hollow needle to create loops of thread or yarn in woven fabric. The loops are pushed between the fabric threads creating a tightly dense and secured textile. These textiles can then be used to make pillows, patches, rugs, wall hangings, furry vases and more!

In this class you'll learn:

  • About this history of punch needling and its origins

  • The different ways to transfer your image

  • How to thread and punch with a punch needle

  • How to select the right yarn for your project

  • How to work with monks’ cloth and the differences between starting fabrics

  • How to create different textures in your pieces

  • How to choose the finish for your project

You'll leave with a medium wall hanging (approximately 12"), punch needle kit so you can continue to practice at home and the know-how to create more pieces on your own!

Registration includes all materials necessary to make a small wall hanging, including a punch needle, monks cloth, a non-slip embroidery hoop, and yarn. Complimentary wine and refreshments are available.

Note: If you would like to bring a little of your own yarn, especially if you have colors you know you want to use in your piece, go for it! We will provide enough yarn for everyone, but if you have anything special you want to incorporate, feel free to bring it along! Please email us at info@bymsjames.com in advance if you’re interested in a custom design.

Not yo Nag Champa: Incense Workshop

Not yo Nag Champa
$85.00

In this class, we'll take a deep dive into the wonderful world of incense and all its magical offerings. We'll discuss the history of incense and its origins. We'll also explore the different types of incense and how they are made. Lastly, we'll have the opportunity to create our own incense blends from scratch. Each student will be provided with a mortar and pestle to crush their herbs and create their own unique incense blend.

What’s Included:

  • 4 hours of hands-on instruction about the history of incense, the different varieties, and how to make it from scratch

  • Natural materials to make a set of incense sticks and cones

  • Complimentary drinks (or dranks) 👀 ; BYOW

  • Light snacks, but not enough to get you full

  • A goodie bag with an incense holder and more!

  • Curated tunes from a featured DJ

  • An overall bomb ass time and a memorable experience

MATERIALS USED:

Students will grind a variety of aromatics, resins, and wood by hand using a mortar and pestle to create their special incense blends. They typically may work with scents that can have a high potency which can sometimes cause headaches and lightheadedness if you’re exposed to them for long periods of time. For that reason, this class will be held outdoors or in a well ventilated space. Some aromatics used are:

  • Dragon’s Blood

  • Sandalwood

  • Sage

  • Palos Santos

  • Bentonin powder

  • Various flower aromas, including rose, lavender, chamomile, etc.

Please take this into consideration if you typically have sensitive allergies. Masks can be provided upon request, and we’ll be more than happy to accommodate you if you’d still like to join! Please reach out to see how we can help.

DRESS CODE:

Like the pastor says, “Come as you are baby." Okay, maybe that sounds more like the pastor’s wife, but you get it. The vibe is grown and sexy, but comfortable and chill. Make this experience whatever it is for you! We’re open to everyone! We will say that some of our classes can get a little messy, but aprons and gloves will be provided just in case…Don’t trip. We got you. And them ;-)
